The Blue Wave Offline Mail Reader/386, v2.30
Installation and Upgrade Documentation

==========
WELCOME!
==========
Welcome to The Blue Wave Offline Mail Reader/386, v2.30; the most
powerful offline mail reader available for 32-bit DOS systems! This
documentation file contains instructions for installing The Blue Wave
Offline Mail Reader/386 for the first time, and for upgrading from a
previous version of the mail reader (v2.20, v2.21).
Please read these instructions carefully. Following these simple
procedures will help to insure that you install the mail reader
successfully the FIRST time!
** A special note for our friends who use speech synthesis hardware
and software for screen reading; when loading INST386.EXE and
BWAVE386.EXE, add a "/s" command line parameter, such as:
INST386 /s
This will put the installation program into a mode that is more
compatible with your speech software. We are sorry that we cannot
recommend the use of Blue Wave/386 with speech software. Full
details about why Blue Wave/386 probably will not work to your
satisfaction can be found in the file BWAVE386.DOC, which will be
unpacked by the installation program.

UPGRADE INSTALLATIONS
=====================
1) If you have never installed Blue Wave/386, or you would like to
install this version of the mail reader to a new directory
(rather than upgrading/converting an older version), please skip
to the next section of the documentation; NEW INSTALLATIONS.
2) The installation program, INST386.EXE, can only upgrade an existing
version of the 386 mail reader. It cannot convert Blue Wave/OS2
or Blue Wave/DOS to Blue Wave/386 v2.30.
3) *Before* loading the installation program, make a backup copy of
your existing mail reader setup.
4) If you have renamed the file BWAVE386.EXE, you must change it back
to BWAVE386.EXE. The upgrade will not work properly unless you do.
5) Copy the files BWAVE386.INS and INST386.EXE to a temporary
directory. These files are contained in the main BW23_386.ZIP
archive.
6) Type "INST386" at the DOS command line, without the quotes.
7) Select "Upgrade Installation" from the screen which asks if you
are installing new or upgrading.
8) Enter the directory name where your current mail reader is
installed.
9) The installation program will take over from there. All of your
files from old versions of the mail reader will be converted,
and new program files will be unpacked.
All files that were modified and are no longer used with version
2.30 of the mail reader will be moved to a directory called OLD386
off of your main reader directory. (If your main reader directory
is C:\BWAVE, C:\BWAVE\OLD386 will contain your old configuration,
documentation, and program files). After you are comfortable
running v2.30, and you are certain that you will no longer need
the old files, you can delete them to save drive space.
10) Delete the files BWAVE386.INS and INST386.EXE, as you will not need
them to run the mail reader. However, you may want to save a copy
of BW23_386.ZIP in case you need or want to reinstall the mail
reader at a later date. INST386.EXE can be used at a later time to
'selectively' install portions of the mail reader program. For a
description of what files are contained in the installation file,
skip to the last section of this documentation file.
11) Enjoy the new features and capabilities of the new mail reader!
=================
NEW INSTALLATIONS
=================
1) Copy BWAVE386.INS and INST386.EXE to a temporary directory.
2) Type "INST386" at the DOS command prompt, without the quotes.
3) The installation program will ask you for the name of the directory
where you would like the mail reader installed. Type a directory
name and press <Enter>. If this directory does not exist, the
installation program will automatically create it for you.
4) After a directory name has been entered, you will be presented with
a screen which allows you to select the components of the mail
reader you would like to install. ALL of these items should be set
to "Yes", since you have never installed the mail reader before.
5) After the installation program has unpacked all of the necessary
files, you will be told to change to the mail reader's installation
directory and type "BWAVE386" (again, without the quotes). At this
point the installation program has done its job, and the next step
is to load the actual mail reader.
6) You may delete BWAVE386.INS and INST386.EXE after the installation
has been completed. They are not used by the mail reader, and are
only temporary installation files. However, you should save a copy
of BW23_386.ZIP in case you want or need to reinstall the mail
reader in the future.
7) You may want to scan the next section of this file, as it explains
what each of the files unpacked by the installation program is used
for.
========================================
SELECTIVE INSTALLATIONS AND FILE LISTING
========================================
The enclosed installation program (INST386.EXE) can be used to
selectively install items from the mail reader's distribution archive.
To selectively unpack only certain files, load INST386, select "New
Installation or Partial Installation", and a directory name where you
would like the files unpacked.
Immediately after giving the directory where you want the reader files
placed, you have the opportunity to select the files that will be
unpacked. Below is a listing of which files will be unpacked when
individual groups are selected for installation.
Executable (program) files
--------------------------
BWAVE386.EXE The main reader program. Without this file,
you will not get very far! BWAVE386.EXE is
the DOS 32-bit version of the mail reader.
BWAVE386.VMC A sample "Virtual Memory Control" file, for
controlling the way DOS4GW.EXE handles memory
on your system. This is a plain ASCII text
file.
DOS4GW.EXE The reader requires that this file be in the
*same* directory as BWAVE386.EXE, or in a
directory on your system PATH. If you are
unsure of what the "system PATH", is, don't
worry. Just leave it in the mail reader's
home directory.
TED3.COM The message editor distributed with Blue
Wave/386. You are free to use your own message
editor if you like.
Documentation files
-------------------
BWAVE386.DOC The main reader documentation file.
BWDOOR.DOC Documentation for using The Blue Wave Offline
Mail Doors
TED3.DOC Documentation for the message editor that is
distributed with Blue Wave/386.
BETASITE.230 A text file containing a list of all people
who tested The Blue Wave Offline Mail Reader
v2.30.
WHATSNEW.230 A listing of changes made between v2.20 and
v2.30 of The Blue Wave Offline Mail Reader.
Online Help File
----------------
BWAVE.HLP The file which contains all of the online
help for the mail reader. If you do not
unpack this file, you will not be able to
press <F1> for help within the mail reader.
You will definitely *want* to unpack this
file.
